  1. Evaluation (e.g. benefit, unsatisfactory)
  2. Consequence, cause, reason (e.g. outcome, produce, explanation)
  3. modifiers (e.g. significant, majority)
  4. connectors (under these circumstances, moreover)
  5. grouping nouns (aspect, factor, feature)

Opinion

To what extent”

“رژیم غذایی ایرانیان تا حد زیادی تغییر کرده است / بسیار قابل توجه / حداقل / اصلاً / و غیره.” to a great extent/very significantly/ minimally/not at all

New technologies have changed the way children spend their free time.
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

The advent of new technologies has led to changes in young children’s recreational activities. In my view, the drawbacks of those changes are more significant than the benefits.

On the one hand, the appearance of new devices has brought certain values to children. First, more choices are now available on computers or any other electrical devices that are connected to the Internet. This would satisfy children of different preferences for entertainment, such as watching movies, listening to music or playing games on the online platform. Second, some useful skills and necessary qualities can be either initially obtained or honed by playing electronic games. Scientifically, racing games help develop motor skills in later life. Also, creativity and fast reflexes which are of great use in the future can be enhanced through puzzle or shooting games.

Despite those said advantages, I still believe that the downside of the emergence of modern technological devices in children’s leisure time is more worrying. The first drawback is that children might develop a passive lifestyle and possibly isolate themselves from society. This is because this way of entertainment is extremely addictive, and children, therefore, are likely to spend hours in their room without any communication with the outside world if exposed frequently. Furthermore, exposure to technology could lead to deterioration in health as hours spent on using computers can cause tremendous harm to eyesight. In fact, children at school age are suffering from short-sight due to playing video games or browsing Facebook for a long time.

In conclusion, it seems to me that, regarding children’s leisure activities, the benefits of newly introduced technological devices are eclipsed by the disadvantages.

Scientific research should be carried out and controlled by governments rather than private companies.
Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

Scientific research plays an important role in the development of humanity. Some people think that the responsibility for conducting and managing it should be taken by governments, and not by private companies. Personally, I believe that both governments and private businesses should have the right and duty to carry out research.

I believe that governments should play the leading role in performing research due to a number of reasons. Firstly, scientific research is the key to finding solutions to the pressing concerns of society. Thorough medical research, for example, needs to be conducted by governments to develop vaccines against potential epidemics. Research into renewable energies is also crucial to deal with global warming. These kinds of research require a great deal of spending, which can only be afforded by the government. In addition, scientific studies controlled by governments will ensure that reliable and ethical methods are used, and minimize the risk of these studies being used for criminal activity. For instance, studies related to nuclear power or weapons must be carried out or supervised by governmental organizations to protect a country from terrorism or other warfare.

However, private companies can do research that is not carried out by governments. In fact, many useful scientific discoveries have been made by private institutions. To illustrate, the invention of the iPhone by Apple, a corporation in the US began the era of smartphones and facilitated modern forms of interaction between people all over the world. Furthermore, encouraging profit-driven companies to conduct scientific investigations will help them develop their own products and create competition in the marketplace. Society will therefore benefit from new inventions and better products.

In conclusion, although governments should control and carry out major scientific studies, private companies should not be deprived of the right to do research. (297 words)

Maintaining public libraries is a waste of money since computer technology can replace their functions.
Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

It is often argued that maintaining public libraries is no longer necessary in today’s world because the development of computer technology has allowed us to access a great deal of information on the internet more efficiently. While I accept that there are clear benefits of online libraries over public libraries, I believe that it is still worth spending money on maintaining public libraries.

There are two main advantages of online sources of information. Firstly, online sources can store a huge amount of information that is greater than any physical library. This allows researchers to easily get the information they need without having to travel to a local library. Furthermore, people can look for information on the Internet whenever they want, while most libraries can only be visited for several hours per day. This is therefore particularly beneficial to those who have a hectic schedule and cannot visit these places during operating hours.

However, the preservation of local libraries is still necessary because of their distinguishing features which cannot be substituted by online sources. Libraries, in some countries, are still one of the most popular means of accessing information among senior citizens, regardless of the availability of online
information. In fact, most elderly people these days are technophobes and therefore physical libraries are their preferred option. Furthermore, public libraries can be considered a more reliable source of information, compared with online sources. Indeed, there is an abundance of inaccurate and unreliable information on the Internet, while libraries have proved to be a more reliable information source, with the information being carefully categorized by library staff members.

In conclusion, despite the benefits of computer technology in providing information, in my opinion, there are good grounds for rejecting the view that spending money on maintaining public libraries is unnecessary. (296 words)

Leisure is a growing industry, but people no longer entertain themselves as much as they used to because the use of modern technology has made them less creative.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

Entertainment helps people relieve their pressure from work and study. However, whilst recreational activities are getting increasingly diversified, many people, unfortunately, find that they cannot get entertained as much as they did in the past.

In some areas, modern technology allows the expression of human creativity to go unhindered. Indeed, with up-to-date computer graphics technology, some astonishing special effects are frequently shown in Hollywood movies, particularly in some science-fiction works. Moreover, with the invention of the Internet, game lovers across the globe can explore the fun of online entertainment in a virtual world full of mystery and adventure.

Nevertheless, in most cases, the overuse of modern technology has made life less entertaining than it could have been. Take the music industry as an example. Unlike their predecessors who were constantly exploring life for inspiration and originality, today’s artists are confined to studios, relying on computerised processing and techniques for their work. As a result, despite the mass production of popular songs and music, we rarely find a truly remarkable piece. Imagine again those childhood games we all have played such as “Hide and Seek” or “Drop the Handkerchief”. Simple as they may be, these activities offered us the real excitement of going outside and having fun with our friends. By contrast, nowadays, an increasing number of people are following a sedentary and isolated lifestyle due to the popularity of modern entertainment forms such as watching TV and playing video games.

Given the above arguments, it is reasonable to assume that although modern technology has made our life easier and more comfortable, it takes away the real pleasure of creative entertainment. (270 words)

Model Essay

Some people say that the availability of technology is widening the gap between the rich and the poor, while other people think it is closing the gap. Personally, I believe that the availability of technology has little to do with the gap between the rich and the poor.

On one hand, having access to the latest and most advanced technology could bring a number of financial benefits to people. Advancements in technology have brought about large changes in the way people work and do business, and more specifically, in the efficiency of most workplaces. Technology has enhanced the productivity of most businesses around the world, particularly in manufacturing processes, and this has consequently boosted the profits of many companies, and therefore possibly made many wealthy businessmen even richer, thereby increasing the wealth gap.

However, with an increase in the availability of many new technologies, it is also becoming more affordable for the large majority of people, which has provided more equal opportunities between people, whether rich or poor. For example, the internet has become extremely widespread throughout the world these days and has provided people of all financial status access to a great deal of information that they can use to their advantage to help them educate themselves in order to live better lives, and therefore potentially decrease the gap.

In conclusion, I do not believe that access to technology really has much impact on the gap between rich and poor people. It is education and the acquisition and application of knowledge that may affect the wealth gap between rich and poor.

Nowadays, technological developments are causing environmental problems. Many people think that we should live a simpler life while others believe that technology can solve environmental problems.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

Since the Industrial Revolution was initiated in the late 18th century, science and technology have advanced in leaps and bounds. Our world and our life have both changed tremendously. However, environmental problems have also occurred in their wake.

Our global environment has been severely affected and even damaged as a result of the increasing industrialisation of the world and the pursuit of and use of modern technology. Life has also become increasingly mechanised. There are some people who claim that a simpler life is more preferable as it is less dependent upon fashionable devices and less in the grip of those so-called modern technologies. The more machines are used, the more damage is caused to the environment.

The damage to the environment by scientific and technological developments can only be addressed, if not improved, by the continuous advancement of science and technology. For example, the latest environment-friendly farming methods use less land but produce a higher crop yield. People are now living a much more comfortable and healthier life than at any time in history. Yet there are still many problems for science as well as technology to find a solution to. One of the biggest challenges is what alternative energy sources can be found and utilised to replace the limited and dwindling supply of fossil fuels.

In the process of developing science and technology for human civilisation from industrialisation to computerisation to today’s digitalisation, problems that are not friendly to the environment have appeared. However, the main purpose of technological innovation and creation is to make human life better and safer and to return to a life without this technology on which we have generally become so dependent is, I feel, impractical and, furthermore, impossible.

I believe that the wheel of science and technology will, and should, continue to roll on, and thanks to our ingenuity, new inventions will be created to overcome the current problems that have proved so detrimental to our environment. (325 words)

In today’s world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value our artists such as musicians, painters and writers.
What can art tell us about life that science and technology cannot?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

In this modern era of continual scientific and technological advancement, artists are still gaining a lot of respect from people the world over. There are a number of things about life that the arts can teach us that science and technology fail to.

Many forms of art, especially literature, can deliver messages about the appreciation of what we have in life as well as life itself. Hundreds of literary works depict misery, misfortune and sorrow that still exist in life today, and this sends a strong message to those who do not appreciate their lives. “The Goldfinch”, for example, which narrates a story about the miserable life of the main character after the unfortunate death of his mother makes us wonder whether we have become heartless toward our own loved ones. I doubt that there are any technologies in the world that could manage to convey such a powerful message.

Arts teach us to cherish the beauty of culture and are the fuel for our spiritual lives. This is extremely important in a world where science and technology seem to fade our belief in the gravity of culture in daily life. The connection between art and culture is boundless, and traditional music and ancient paintings can remind us of where we came from and who we are. That is to say, our cultural identity is preserved in various forms of art.

Although science and technology advance our understanding of all things and better our lives, arts can touch us to a much deeper extent, help us value what we have, and remind us of the significance of our culture. (269 words)

  • To gain a lot of respect from somebody
  • To deliver messages about the appreciation of something

There are social, medical and technical problems associated with the use of mobile phones.
What forms do they take? Do you agree that the problems outweigh the benefits of mobile phones?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

Mobile phones are frequently used in almost all aspects of our daily lives. However, a variety of potential problems including social, medical and technical ones arise, which far outweigh the benefits they bring to people.

It is undeniable that mobile phones have facilitated our lives in many different ways. For example, when an emergency occurs, such as a traffic accident or a violent crime, mobile phones can help the victims to call the police or an ambulance immediately for help. They also make people work faster and more efficiently, as people can send or read emails via a mobile phone and communicate quickly and easily with their clients and co-workers.

However, there is an opinion that the wide application of mobile phones also exerts a negative influence on society, an individual’s health and technological development. Indeed, it is the case that talking on a cell phone in public with a high voice disturbs people around. Moreover, as far as the radiation of cell phone is concerned, scientific evidence has shown that radiation that a working mobile phone produces has the potential to cause brain cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Apart from the health problems, a range of technical defects would give rise to a series of dangers. For instance, using mobile phones onboard a plane may affect the navigation system of the aircraft, which will endanger the lives of the passengers.

Given the above arguments, it is reasonable to conclude that although mobile phones have some benefits, the negative influences they have produced should not be overlooked because the downsides far exceed the merits. (262 words)

Travel and Tourism (Real Past IELTS Exam/Test)

Organized tour to remote areas and community is increasingly popular.
Is it a positive or negative development for the local people and the environment?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

In recent years, there has been a growing tendency for tourists to travel to remote locations and communities on organised tours. This has some positive impacts on the local people, but I think the detrimental effects on the environment are more significant and that the issue is more of negative development.

The financial and socio-cultural benefits for the locals in remote areas are evident. Tourists visiting these regions have a high demand for goods and services and are mostly willing to pay higher than average prices. This helps to boost local economies in remote areas and eventually enhance living standards of the local people. Regarding the socio-cultural aspects, Travelers from different cultures can provide ethnic people in remote areas, who are almost completely isolated from the outside world, with a lot of experiences through their interactions with one another, which can help these local residents to broaden knowledge about more civilized society.

However, the hordes of tourists to remote regions still leave severe impacts on the environment in these areas. In fact, tourists often litter where ever they go and do not bother to clean after themselves in areas they have visited. This may lead to such conditions as dirty roads or clogged sewage systems in these places, which negatively and directly affects local people’s living conditions. In terms of indirect effects, I believe that the indigenous people have to sacrifice their natural resources to accommodate tourists’ insatiable demands. In several mountainous areas of Vietnam, local people cut down vast areas of forest to make handicrafts or furniture for tourists. These acts can contribute to environmental deterioration in remote areas.

In conclusion, though the economy and societies in remote areas can benefit tremendously from organised tourism, I think that the negative environmental consequences that this situation brings are far more significant. (304 words)

  • To have a high demand for something

  • Ethnic people
  • To be isolated from the outside world
  • To broaden knowledge about a more civilized society
  • Indigenous (adj)

Some people point out that there will be less international travel in the future.
Do you think it is a positive or negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay

It is said that there would be less cross-country travel in the near future possibly due to the reason that the turmoil happens on sectors of the planet, and thus the visa policy is about to become much stricter. Plus, the constantly rising fuel price gives rise to an unaffordable travel budget. Though the trend can be a little true, 1 still hope it would not happen.

Cutting down non-essential travelling flights can definitely save the planet immeasurable barrels of crude oil, which shows human’s care and love for nature. Environmentally friendly mindsets are no doubt very welcome in today’s world which is characterized by all kinds of crisis including the energy one. Additionally, safety problems caused by travel-related crime are never concerned if international travel is no longer the choice for a holiday plan.

The above scenario seems quite pleasant. However, for that, a lot of fun is sacrificed. Watching ‘Travel Log’ on the travel channel can hardly offer people something special about where the history happened, or the real thrilling taste on the tongue from the local dishes. How can viewing planimetric scenes on the mass media compete with standing on Catherine the Great’s doorstep at St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace or walking all along the Great Wall in China? People learn the beauty of the world by experiencing them, don’t they? What is more, reducing international travel would adversely influence regions and countries where tourism is the backbone industry. This revenue decrease could have led to another inning of the economic crisis in countries like Malaysia or Thailand, and inevitably, the economy would be hindered on a global basis in today’s globalized world.

All in all, cross-boundary travel is a fairly important part of human life as well as a crucial contributor to the world’s economy. We had better not spoil the ship for a half-penny-worth of tar. (305 words)

With the general decrease in travelling costs, international travel is becoming more prevalent. For a variety of reasons and with greater frequency, people are travelling to other countries. International visitors bring their own range of behaviours and customs to the countries they visit. I believe the advantages international travellers bring to the countries they choose to visit outweigh the negatives.

Unfortunately, all countries have within them people who exhibit undesirable behaviour. The vociferous minority seem to leave an impression in the minds of people in host countries. Whether it be leaving the hotel room in a complete mess, or loudly arguing about a matter with a local person, international visitors are sometimes a poor advertisement for their countries. This is certainly the negative side of international visitors.

However, the far greater impression international visitors leave is a good one. Typically, international visitors bring with them money which they inject into the local economy they are visiting, which is excellent for business. They can also educate the local people about what life is like in another part of the world. These international travellers are like ‘ambassadors’ for their countries and can cause others to want to visit their countries – this brings with it obvious economic benefits as well. In addition, international visitors can help others to see things from a different perspective and, often, improve on the way things are done.

Problems can arise from international visitors; however, the benefits they bring to the countries they visit are greater. International visitors around the world will continue to impact the countries to which they travel, and it is up to the individual to make sure the example they set is a good one.

Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures.

In today’s world, international tourism is generating enormous financial wealth and has become the primary source of income for numerous countries around the globe. Although many people think this industry is likely to cause tension, my conviction is that international tourism greatly facilitates understanding between people of different cultural background.

There are indeed several instances of international travel creating social conflicts. One recent incident happened when Logan Paul, a renowned You tuber, visited Japan and made fun of Japanese traditions and lifestyles. Such mockery caused tremendous public outrage and prejudice against this young American. Another example is Chinese tourists’ inappropriate and selfish behaviour during a buffet party in a Thai tourist destination a few years ago. Even though these examples did not speak for the rest of the American and Chinese populations, they, as a matter of fact, increased tension between the countries involved.

That being said, in most cases, visiting a foreign country can help tourists understand more about local customs and lifestyles. While the modern media, such as TV or newspapers, give people some foreign culture exposure, overseas tourists tend to have more authentic and unique experiences that lead to more profound understanding. This is extremely important because embracing cultural differences is key to establishing and maintaining social relationships in this day and age.

In conclusion, international tourism allows overseas visitors to experience different cultures and therefore connects everyone through mutual understanding. In my opinion, we should not merely judge the industry based on a number of situations where conflicts arise from the misconduct of only a group of individuals.

Each year, hundreds of millions of people travel around the globe for leisure, business, and other purposes. The continuous and steady growth of international tourism brings together people from different cultural systems and inevitably leads to misunderstandings and conflicts that are difficult to resolve.

Among the forces contributing to the tension behind these cross-cultural encounters, those of language barriers are perhaps the most prominent. Communication with foreigners has always been difficult and may lead to misunderstandings even with the help of a tour guide or an interpreter. Then, differences in customs and traditions may also produce quite a lot of unpleasantness during a journey. In many Muslim countries, for example, pork and wine are never served because of a taboo against them. This may be particularly difficult to adapt to for a traveller who is planning a long-term stay. Similarly, a Western woman travelling to the Middle East may find it annoying to have to wear a headscarf. What is more, different usage of measurements may cause difficulty in communication. When referring to distance, for instance, Americans tend to use “miles”, which may cause some difficulty in understanding people who use “kilometres”.

Apart from these tensions caused by cultural differences, international tourism may also lead to conflicts between tourists and a local community. International tourism brings huge numbers of travellers from all over the world to a local community who may prefer to live peacefully without disruption from the outside world. However, noise, congestion, and pollution always accompany international tourists to the environment and cultures of the regions they visit.

Undeniably, international tourism is among the foremost vehicles for cultural exchange and proves to be an effective way to boost a region’s economic growth. However, before the cultural gap that exists between the home and a foreign destination can be bridged and “hospitable tourism” becomes a global practice, it always creates tension rather than understanding along the trip. No one can deny that a trip to a remote destination away from one’s everyday life and culture is an exciting experience for the traveller, but its negative impact on the local culture and traditions cannot be ignored.

In many places, cultural traditions are destroyed because they are being commercialized for profits. For example, the moment a tourist sets foot on a place of attraction, he is always first welcomed by a crowd of peddlers or a line of shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts that are often fake and overpriced. What is more, in the peak tourist seasons, there are just so many visitors that even the remotest island turns into a noisy market. Those who are expecting a quiet cultural journey may finally end up seeing the same hustle and bustle in a modern city.

There are, however, arguments for setting up money-making attractions in a tourist area. We cannot afford to renovate historical buildings if they were not visited at a price. If traditional skills and lifestyles were not presented to visitors in an impressive way, they might soon be forgotten. For many parts of the world, tourism becomes a major source of income and helps to save the local culture from dying out.

We should find the right balance between tourism development and cultural protection, and I believe the government has a very important role to play here. In my own country, for example, many tourist cities have made effective development plans to successfully attract large numbers of visitors while still preserving their distinct cultural traditions.
